The Practicability of Simplified Intelligence scale on Draft-A series of studies to develop psychiatric screening test for draft(4)

Abstract
This study has two purposes. One is for the practicability of simplified intelligence scale(SIS) of 16PF as a mass screening test for mental retardation on draft. The other is to investigate the prevalence rate of borderline intelligence on
draftees and
to consider about their management in the army. SIS was performed weekly for about 100 draftees randomly selected who entered the 000 Replacement Batallion from July 27to October 9, 1992. The highest score of IS is 15. The draftees who had score
below 6
were tested with Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale(KWIS) for further evaluation. 804 draftees were tested and the mean¡¾SD all was 11.56¡¾2.31. The mean¡¾SD of SIS for those who graduated high school level and had the above high school education
level
was 10.77¡¾2.41 and 12.96¡¾1.98, respectively. There wasa statistical significance between two groups. 31 draftees had' a score below 6 of SIS. Among 31 draftees who were tested KWIS, two had below IQ 70 and it represented 0.25% of all draftees.
They were classified as mental retardation and returned home for reevaluation with school progress reports and certificate for mental health. Draftees who had IQ 71-84 were fifteen.
They are classified as borderline intelligence group and it reperesented 1.87% of all examinees.
On the other hand, 0.003% in 1992 and 0.001% in 1991 was psychiatrically inadequate draftees on psychiatric screening test I and II performed at the Office of Military Manpower Administration.
By the comparison of the correlation between the score of SIS an KWIS, it was inadequate to decide the cut-off score off score of SIS for mental retardation because of its small sample, However, among 15 draftees who had scord below 6 in SIS and
IQ
71-84 in KWIS, 12 draftees had 5 or 6 scores of SIS. Therefore, it is desirable to continue the cut-off score of SIS as 6.
As a result of this study, SIS has been proved as a useful and essential screening test for mental retardation. In the follow-up study, it will, it will be useful and necessary to set principle to treat borderline intelligence group because they
high
potentials to make troubles in adjustment in their military life.
